    The backstory.

French onion soup has always been one of those restaurant favorites I can't resist, especially when it arrives bubbling with melty cheese and toasted bread. Bringing those same savory flavors into the slow cooker turned out to be an easy way to make them part of a weeknight dinner rotation. It has all the cozy comfort of classic French onion soup, paired with tender chicken and a creamy sauce the whole family can enjoy.

    It's a must make.

When you're craving comfort food but still need something practical for a busy day, this French onion chicken crock pot meal delivers.

    • All the flavors you love from French onion soup. Tender onions, herbs, and a rich sauce turn simple chicken into something everyone looks forward to.
    • Easy enough for busy nights. The slow cooker does most of the work, making it a great weeknight dinner option.
    • Comfort food without feeling too heavy. Lean boneless skinless chicken breasts keep things hearty while still feeling balanced.

    Let's talk flavor and texture.

Imagine cutting into tender chicken that's been slowly cooked in a creamy French onion sauce packed with sweet onions and savory herbs. Each bite is rich and comforting without being overwhelming. The toasted French bread soaks up some of the sauce while the Swiss cheese melts into every nook and cranny, creating that classic French onion soup experience in dinner form. It's cozy, creamy, savory, and just plain satisfying.

    What you'll need.

Crockpot French onion slow cooker ingredients.Pin

You don't need anything fancy to make crock pot french onion chicken - just a handful of simple ingredients that work together beautifully in the slow cooker.

    • Onions: The star of the show. They soften as they cook and add classic French onion flavor.
    • Boneless skinless chicken breasts: Lean, easy to cook, and perfect for soaking up the flavorful sauce.
    • Cream of chicken soup: Creates the creamy base for the sauce.
    • Cornstarch: Helps thicken the sauce so it coats the chicken beautifully.
    • Dried thyme: Adds earthy flavor and complements the onions perfectly.
    • Dry French onion soup mix: Packs in extra savory flavor.
    • Sour cream: Stirred in at the end for a creamy finish.
    • French bread: Toasted and used for serving.
    • Swiss cheese: Melty, nutty, and classic with French onion flavors.
    • Fresh thyme or parsley: Optional garnish that adds freshness and color.

How to make French onion slow cooker chicken.

Here's an overview on how to make this recipe. See the recipe card below for complete instructions. Enjoy!

    1. Layer the softened onions in the bottom of the slow cooker.
    2. Arrange the chicken on top and pour the creamy onion mixture over everything.
    3. Cover and cook on low until the chicken is tender and fully cooked through.
    4. Stir in the sour cream, then serve over toasted French bread with plenty of swiss cheese.

    Make it your way.

French onion slow cooker chicken is easy to tweak depending on what your family enjoys.

    • Use boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts for a slightly richer, more tender option.
    • Caramelize the onions in butter instead of microwaving them. Sauté over medium-high heat just until they get some color, then let the slow cooker finish the job.
    • Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce to boost the savory, salty flavor.
    • Stir in fresh minced garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder for extra flavor.
    • For an extra melty finish, place Swiss cheese over the cooked chicken and broil briefly just until melted.

If cozy chicken dinners are your thing, there are plenty more slow cooker favorites to add to your menu. Creamy Crock Pot Chicken Thighs and Rice is the kind of comforting, stick-to-your-ribs meal that's perfect for busy nights when you need dinner to handle itself. For something simple but packed with flavor, 6-Ingredient Crockpot Chicken Paprika combines tender chicken with a rich, savory sauce using just a handful of ingredients. And if your family loves classic comfort food, Easy Slow Cooker Chicken Cordon Bleu with Stuffing brings together chicken, ham, swiss cheese, and stuffing in one easy crockpot meal that's always a hit around the dinner table.

    How to serve it.

    Slow cooker French onion chicken.Pin

French onion chicken crock pot is at its best when served warm with all those cozy toppings.

    • Serve each chicken breast over toasted French bread and spoon plenty of French onion sauce over the top.
    • Finish with extra Swiss cheese and a sprinkle of fresh herbs.
    • Pair it with a simple green salad for a balanced dinner.
    • Add roasted green beans, roasted carrots, or steamed broccoli on the side.
    • Butter the French bread and broil it until toasted, then top with Swiss cheese and broil again until melted and bubbly. Add the chicken and sauce right on top.
    • Serve over mashed potatoes instead of French bread for a different take.

    Kori's tips.

    • Don't skip softening the onions first - they need a little head start so they become tender by the time the chicken is done.
    • Watch the cook time carefully. Chicken breasts can dry out if they cook too long.
    • Stir the sour cream in at the end to keep the sauce smooth and creamy.
    • If you'd like more onion flavor, sauté the onions before adding them to the crockpot.
    • Toast the French bread right before serving so it stays crisp under the sauce.
    • Use freshly grated swiss cheese if possible for the best melt.

    Notes

Don't miss all of our helpful hints, substitution ideas, cooking tips, and other delicious recipes that can be found in our post. Check it out!
NOTES: The onions are microwaved to give them a headstart on cooking; otherwise, the chicken is finished cooking well before the onions. Do not overcook the chicken breast; it can dry out easily.
VARIATIONS: Chicken thighs can be substituted for the boneless skinless chicken breast. The onions can be sauteed in butter over medium-high heat in a skillet to get some browning (and more flavor) before placing them in the slow cooker.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve on toasted french bread with swiss cheese and garnish with fresh thyme or parsley. Salt and pepper to taste.

I am confused about the bread where and when does this come in. I would imagine at the end right? This does not go in the crockpot does it?

Hello! The bread is at the end for serving the chicken and sauce over. Toast the bread, top with the chicken and sauce, then some cheese and fresh parsley. Delicious! Enjoy!
