- Stir in the sour cream, then serve over toasted French bread with plenty of swiss cheese.
Make it your way.
French onion slow cooker chicken is easy to tweak depending on what your family enjoys.
- Use boneless skinless chicken thighs instead of chicken breasts for a slightly richer, more tender option.
- Caramelize the onions in butter instead of microwaving them. Sauté over medium-high heat just until they get some color, then let the slow cooker finish the job.
- Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of Worcestershire sauce or soy sauce to boost the savory, salty flavor.
- Stir in fresh minced garlic or 1 teaspoon garlic powder for extra flavor.
- For an extra melty finish, place Swiss cheese over the cooked chicken and broil briefly just until melted.

How to serve it.

French onion chicken crock pot is at its best when served warm with all those cozy toppings.
- Serve each chicken breast over toasted French bread and spoon plenty of French onion sauce over the top.
- Finish with extra Swiss cheese and a sprinkle of fresh herbs.
- Pair it with a simple green salad for a balanced dinner.
- Add roasted green beans, roasted carrots, or steamed broccoli on the side.
- Butter the French bread and broil it until toasted, then top with Swiss cheese and broil again until melted and bubbly. Add the chicken and sauce right on top.
- Serve over mashed potatoes instead of French bread for a different take.
Kori's tips.
- Don't skip softening the onions first - they need a little head start so they become tender by the time the chicken is done.
- Watch the cook time carefully. Chicken breasts can dry out if they cook too long.
- Stir the sour cream in at the end to keep the sauce smooth and creamy.
- If you'd like more onion flavor, sauté the onions before adding them to the crockpot.
- Toast the French bread right before serving so it stays crisp under the sauce.
- Use freshly grated swiss cheese if possible for the best melt.

I am confused about the bread where and when does this come in. I would imagine at the end right? This does not go in the crockpot does it?
slowcookedeats says
Hello! The bread is at the end for serving the chicken and sauce over. Toast the bread, top with the chicken and sauce, then some cheese and fresh parsley. Delicious! Enjoy!
