    The backstory.

This soup takes me right back to my grandmother's kitchen-where a big pot of potato soup was always bubbling away on cold afternoons. She never measured a thing, just tossed in ham bones, potatoes, and a little love. That smell meant it was time to grab a bowl and settle in by the window while the world outside got quiet and the kitchen stayed warm.

Slow cooker ham and potato soup is a must make.

This crockpot ham and potato soup is the definition of classic comfort, and here's why you'll love it:

    • Simple prep. Everything goes straight into the slow cooker-no fuss, no stress.
    • Great for leftovers. It's the perfect way to use up leftover holiday ham after the holidays.
    • Cozy flavor. The creamy broth, smoky ham, and tender potatoes are pure, hearty soup comfort.
    • Family favorite. Even picky eaters love this thick and hearty potato soup recipe.

    What you'll need.

Ingredients needed for making ham and potato soup crockpot recipe on a white board.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this ham and potato soup crockpot recipe:

    • Potatoes: a mix of russet and sweet potatoes gives this soup a hearty texture and rich, comforting flavor.
    • Vegetables: carrots, celery, onion, and sweet corn bring color, sweetness, and depth that make every spoonful delicious.
    • Ham: leftover or store-bought diced ham adds smoky, savory goodness.
    • Seasonings: garlic powder, smoked paprika, thyme, salt, and black pepper blend perfectly for a cozy, balanced flavor.
    • Chicken broth and cream: chicken broth keeps it light and flavorful, while a touch of heavy cream at the end makes it silky smooth.
    • Herbs: fresh parsley and chives give the soup a bright, fresh finish and pop of color.
    • Optional loaded potato soup add-ins: shredded cheddar cheese, sour cream, and extra chives turn this into the ultimate indulgent bowl of comfort.

    Customize it your own way.

This ham and potato soup crockpot recipe is easy to make your own - try one of these tasty twists:

    • Swap in Yukon gold potatoes for an even creamier, buttery texture.
    • Add crispy bacon or smoked sausage for extra smoky depth and heartiness.
    • Stir in chopped spinach, kale, or peas at the end for a pop of green and freshness.
    • If you've got a leftover ham bone from the holidays, slow cook it with the rest of the ingredients for even more flavor!
    • Use leftover turkey or rotisserie chicken instead of ham for a fun twist on classic potato soup.
    • Add a handful of shredded cheddar cheese while thickening for a rich, cheesy version.
    • Mix in a spoonful of sour cream for added tang and creaminess.
    • Stir in roasted garlic or caramelized onions for a deeper, savory flavor.
    • Top with crunchy croutons or crushed crackers for a little extra texture.

    How to serve it.

    • With warm dinner rolls or crusty French bread for soaking up every last drop.
    • Topped with shredded cheddar, sour cream, and chives for that loaded potato soup twist.
    • Served in bread bowls for a fun, hearty presentation.
    • This dish pairs well with a crisp green salad or roasted veggies for a balanced meal.

    • In small cups, it makes a cozy starter for a holiday or family dinner.

    Kori's tips.

    • Cut your potatoes evenly so they cook at the same rate. Sweet potatoes cook faster, so you can make them larger.
    • Taste before adding more salt-ham can make the broth plenty salty on its own.
    • Stir in the cream mixture at the end to keep the soup smooth and creamy.
    • Got leftovers? Store in an airtight container in the fridge and enjoy over the next few days-it gets even better.

    FAQ's

What's the best way to store it?

Store leftover ham soup in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days.

    Can I freeze it?

Yes! Cool completely, then freeze in portions. Thaw overnight in the fridge before reheating.

What's the best way to reheat it?

Reheat slowly on the stovetop over medium heat or in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each. Add a splash of broth or milk if it thickens too much.
