Why You'll Love This Apple Crisp Slow Cooker Recipe

Super Easy. This recipe is super easy to make because everything is cooked in the slow cooker. Your apple mixture sits at the bottom, and your crumble is poured over the top and slow-cooked until the apples are tender.

Delicious Flavor! I love apple crisp, and this crockpot apple crisp is no different. Granny Smith apples mixed with cinnamon and nutmeg and then topped with an oat, almond, and spiced crumble topping. A classic combination!

Classic Combination. I can't think of a better combination than warm apple crisp and cold vanilla ice cream. Sprinkle with a little extra cinnamon or caramel for a comforting dessert for the whole family.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this slow cooker apple crisp:

    Apple Filling

    • Granny Smith Apples: you can use another variety of apples if desired--I suggest using any sweet and tart apples.
    • Sugar: use regular sugar or a sugar substitute of choice.
    • Instant Tapioca: used to thicken the apple mixture.
    • Lemon Juice: a small lemon will yield about 2 tablespoons of fresh juice.
    • Ground Cinnamon
    • Ground Nutmeg

    Crisp Topping

    • Regular Oats
    • All Purpose Flour
    • Sliced Almonds: use sliced, slivered, or chopped, based on your preference.
    • Brown Sugar: use regular or a brown sugar substitute.
    • Ground Ginger
    • Butter: salted or unsalted can be used. I prefer to use unsalted so I can adjust seasonings.
    • Serving: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.

For exact ingredient quantities, please see the recipe card below!

    Substitutions and Variations

    • Add sliced pears with your apples for an apple and pear crisp.
    • Use apple pie filling in place of fresh apples, spices, and tapioca.
    • Substitute walnuts or pecans for almonds.
    • Add some fresh lemon zest to the apple mixture for extra lemon flavor. Start by adding a teaspoon.
    • Use gluten free flour in place of all-purpose flour if desired.

    3. Cover and cook on high until the apples are tender.

Hint: don't skip the nonstick spray in the beginning! This will help prevent your apples from sticking to the bottom. You can also use a crockpot liner for easy cleanup!

Best Slow Cooker Apple Crisp Tips

    • Tart apples work best for apple crisp as they give a stronger apple flavor, and the sugar balances out the tartness.
    • Make ahead the apple crumble to save time!
    • Cut the recipe in half if needed, or double it for a larger party.

Apple Crisp Slow Cooker Recipe FAQ's

    How to store it

Once cooled, transfer to an air-tight container and store in the fridge for up to 4 days.

    How to reheat

Microwave a serving on a microwave-safe dish and warm on for 20 to 45 seconds. Warm for longer if desired.

What's the difference between apple crumble and apple crisp?

The difference between the two is very slim, actually! Apple crumble and apple crisps both start with an apple base layer and are topped with either a crumble or a crisp. Crumble topping is usually just flour, sugar, and butter, whereas a crisp topping will have oats, flour, nuts, butter, and sugar.

What are the best apples to use for apple crisp?

The apples to use are a tart variety such as granny smith apples, golden delicious, or Honeycrisp. You can combine multiple varieties together as well!

Is it necessary to peel apples for apple crisp?

Some people don't think you have to peel the apples, but I highly suggest you don't skip this step! If you don't peel the apples, it can change the texture of your apple desserts and sometimes harder to chew with the peels on.
