    The backstory.

My love for Maryland-style hot crab dip started on a beach trip to Ocean City, where it seemed like every restaurant had their own version on the menu. After one bite, I was hooked on the creamy crab, melty cheese, and classic Old Bay flavor. When I got home, I knew I wanted an easy version I could make in my crock pot, especially for holidays, game days, and family get-togethers. Now this slow cooker crab dip is one of those recipes I pull out whenever I need an appetizer I know everyone will gather around.

    It's a must make.

If you're looking for an appetizer that's easy to prep, stays warm for hours, and tastes like something from your favorite seafood restaurant, this hot crab dip crockpot recipe is a keeper.

    • It's easy. Everything mixes together in minutes and cooks right in your slow cooker.
    • It's packed with classic Maryland flavor. Lump crab meat, Old Bay seasoning, fresh lemon juice, and plenty of cheese make every bite rich, savory, and satisfying.
    • It's easy to throw together. Just add everything to the crock pot, give it a stir, and let it cook while you take care of the rest of your menu.
    • Everyone gathers around it. Serve it with crackers, toasted bread, or fresh veggies, and don't be surprised when people come back for seconds.

    Let's talk flavor and texture.

This crockpot hot crab dip is warm, creamy, and loaded with tender bites of crab throughout. The cream cheese, sour cream, mozzarella, and Parmesan melt into a smooth, cheesy base while the Old Bay seasoning, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, and lemon juice bring just the right balance of savory, bright, and slightly tangy flavors. Every bite is rich without feeling heavy, especially when scooped up with a crisp cracker or toasted baguette.

    What you'll need.

Ingredients needed to make hot crab dip crockpot recipe on a white marble countertop.

This crockpot hot crab dip is made with simple ingredients that come together into something unforgettable.

    • Cream cheese: Eight ounces cream cheese creates the rich, creamy base for this dip recipe. Let it soften slightly so it melts more easily.
    • Sour cream: Adds a little tanginess while making the dip extra smooth and creamy.
    • Mayonnaise: Gives the dip richness and helps everything blend together.
    • Lemon juice: Fresh lemon juice brightens the flavors and balances the richness. Adjust to taste.
    • Worcestershire sauce: Adds savory depth with just a teaspoon.
    • Old Bay seasoning: The classic bay seasoning that gives this Maryland-style crab dip its signature flavor.
    • Garlic powder: Adds mellow garlic flavor without overpowering the crab.
    • Shredded mozzarella cheese: Melts beautifully into the creamy sauce.
    • Grated Parmesan cheese: Adds a salty, nutty finish that complements the seafood.
    • Crab meat: Canned crab meat makes this recipe easy, but lump crab meat is always a great choice if you have it.
    • Green onions: Stir some into the dip and save a few for garnish before you serve.
    • Salt: Add to taste after everything has melted together.
    • Hot sauce or cayenne (optional): A simple way to add a little extra kick.

How to make Maryland hot crab dip in slow cooker.

Here's an overview on how to make this recipe. See the recipe card below for complete instructions. Enjoy!

    1. Add all of the ingredients to your slow cooker and gently stir everything together.
    2. Cover and cook on LOW for 1 hour.
    3. Stir well, then continue cooking for another 1 to 2 hours until the cheese is melted and the dip is hot and bubbly.
    4. Give it one final stir, garnish with extra green onions if you'd like, then switch the cooker to warm and serve.

    Make it your way.

Maryland hot crab dip is easy to make it your own with just a few different swaps or additions.

    • Swap the mozzarella for shredded cheddar, white cheddar, or pepper jack cheese.
    • Stir in chopped red bell pepper for extra color and a little sweetness.
    • Add a few dashes of your favorite hot sauce or an extra pinch of cayenne if you like more heat.
    • Mix in a little dried dill for another layer of seafood-friendly flavor.
    • If you have fresh lump crab, use it instead of canned crab meat for an extra-special appetizer.
    • Make it smoky by adding a touch of smoked paprika or a spoonful of smoky barbecue sauce.

    How to serve it.

This hot crab dip crockpot is best served warm right from the slow cooker so every scoop stays creamy and delicious.

    • Sprinkle extra green onions and a light dusting of Old Bay over the top before serving.
    • Serve with toasted baguette slices, buttery crackers, pita chips, or tortilla chips.
    • Offer celery sticks, cucumber slices, carrots, and bell pepper strips for a lighter option.
    • Spoon the dip into mini phyllo shells for an easy party appetizer.
    • Stuff baked mushroom caps with the crab dip for another fun serving idea.
    • Keep the slow cooker on Warm throughout your party so the dip stays perfectly creamy.

    Kori's tips.

    • Drain the canned crab meat well so the dip stays thick and creamy.
    • Taste before adding salt - Old Bay, Parmesan, and canned crab can already be fairly salty.
    • Keep the slow cooker on warm while serving so the cheese stays smooth for the entire party.
    • Adjust the lemon juice at the end if needed.
    • Different brands of mayonnaise can change how much brightness the dip needs.
    • No slow cooker? Bake it in a greased baking dish at 375 degrees F for 25 to 30 minutes until hot and bubbly.

    FAQ's

What is the best way to store it?

Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

    Can I freeze it?

I don't recommend freezing this recipe. Because it's made with cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise, the texture can become grainy and separate after thawing.

What's the best way to reheat it?

The best way to reheat this crab dip is gently in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each, until hot.

    Notes

For more helpful hints, substitution ideas, slow cooking tips, and other delicious recipe ideas, check out my post above.

TIPS: Keep the crockpot plugged in on warm, and serve it straight out of the pot. Salt to taste and adjust lemon juice to taste. The amount needed will depend on the brand of mayo you use.
BAKING INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat your oven to 375°F, then transfer the prepared crab dip mixture into a greased 1½- to 2-quart baking dish. Smooth the top and sprinkle with the remaining cheese (and a little extra Old Bay if you’d like). Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, or until hot, bubbly around the edges, and lightly golden on top. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving so it sets slightly.
VARIATIONS: Swap mozzarella for pepper jack or white cheddar for a spicier twist. Add finely chopped red pepper or a splash of hot sauce for extra zip. Light mayo and cream cheese work perfectly in this recipe. Add a little dried dill, which pairs well with shellfish.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve hot with toasted baguette slices, buttery crackers, or fresh veggies like celery and bell pepper strips. It also makes an amazing filling for mini phyllo cups or baked mushrooms.
