    The backstory.

My love for Maryland-style hot crab dip started on a beach trip to Ocean City, where every restaurant had its own take on this creamy, savory classic. I fell head over heels for the rich mix of crab meat, cream cheese, and that iconic Old Bay seasoning. Naturally, I had to make a slow cooker version that captures all the flavor with almost no effort. This slow cooker crab dip has been my go-to for parties, holidays, and cozy nights in ever since-it's foolproof and always a hit.

    It's a must make.

This hot crab dip crockpot recipe is one you'll come back to again and again!

    • It's easy. Everything mixes together in minutes and cooks to perfection in your slow cooker.
    • It stays hot. Cook it in your slow cooker and your dip will continue to stay hot and won't congeal and get cold like the baked version does.
    • It's family-friendly. The creamy cheese and tender crab meat win over kids and adults alike.
    • It's Maryland-style comfort food. With Old Bay, fresh lemon juice, and rich cream cheese, this slow cooker crab dip tastes like it came straight from the coast.

    What you'll need.

Ingredients needed to make hot crab dip crockpot recipe on a white marble countertop.

This crockpot hot crab dip is made with simple ingredients that come together into something unforgettable.

    • Cream cheese: Use 8 ounces cream cheese for that smooth, creamy base.
    • Sour cream and mayonnaise: A ½ cup sour cream and a touch of mayo make the dip rich and perfectly spreadable.
    • Crab meat: Lump crab meat gives the best flavor and texture, but canned crab meat works great too-just drain it well.
    • Cheese: A combination of cheddar cheese, mozzarella, and Parmesan makes this dip ultra gooey.
    • Seasonings: Old Bay, garlic powder, and a splash of Worcestershire sauce give it that classic Maryland-style flavor.
    • Lemon juice and green onions: Fresh lemon juice brightens things up while green onions add a pop of freshness.

For exact ingredient quantities, please see the recipe card below!

    Customize it your own way.

You can easily make this Maryland hot crab dip your own:

    • Add spice. Mix in hot sauce, red pepper flakes, or a pinch of cayenne pepper.
    • Change the cheese. Swap cheddar for pepper jack or Monterey Jack for a little kick.
    • Make it smoky. Stir in a touch of smoked paprika or a spoonful of smoky barbecue sauce.
    • Add texture. Top with buttered breadcrumbs or crushed crackers before serving.

    How to serve it.

This hot crab dip crockpot recipe is perfect for parties, holidays, or cozy nights in. Try serving it a few different ways:

    • Classic style: Serve hot straight from your slow cooker with toasted baguette slices, buttery crackers, or pretzel crisps.
    • Fresh and light: Pair it with celery sticks, bell pepper strips, or cucumber slices.
    • Creative twist: Spoon it into mushroom caps or baked potato halves for a rich, indulgent bite.
    • Party-style: Keep it on warm during gatherings so everyone can enjoy it gooey and melty for hours.

    Kori's tips.

    •  Go for quality crab. Use high-quality lump crab meat for the sweetest flavor and best texture.
    • Drain well. If using canned crab meat, drain it completely and pick through for shells.
    • Season generously. Don't skip the Old Bay-it's what makes this dip taste authentically Maryland-style.
    • Brighten it up. A squeeze of fresh lemon juice right before serving balances all that creamy richness.
    • Keep it warm. Serve directly from your crock pot on LOW to keep it hot and bubbly during your party

I don't recommend freezing since the creamy texture changes once thawed.

Reheat on LOW in your slow cooker for 1 hour, or warm gently in the microwave in 30-second intervals, stirring between each.

    Notes

For more helpful hints, substitution ideas, slow cooking tips, and other delicious recipe ideas, check out my post above.

TIPS: Keep the crockpot plugged in on warm, and serve it straight out of the pot. Salt to taste and adjust lemon juice to taste. The amount needed will depend on the brand of mayo you use.
BAKING INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat your oven to 375°F, then transfer the prepared crab dip mixture into a greased 1½- to 2-quart baking dish. Smooth the top and sprinkle with the remaining cheese (and a little extra Old Bay if you’d like). Bake uncovered for 25 to 30 minutes, or until hot, bubbly around the edges, and lightly golden on top. Let it rest for 5 minutes before serving so it sets slightly.
VARIATIONS: Swap mozzarella for pepper jack or white cheddar for a spicier twist. Add finely chopped red pepper or a splash of hot sauce for extra zip. Light mayo and cream cheese work perfectly in this recipe. Add a little dried dill, which pairs well with shellfish.
SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve hot with toasted baguette slices, buttery crackers, or fresh veggies like celery and bell pepper strips. It also makes an amazing filling for mini phyllo cups or baked mushrooms.
