The Best Crockpot Green Bean Casserole!

7 Ingredients. You'll only need a few simple ingredients (that you may already have in your pantry) to make this recipe. Cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, black pepper, garlic powder, French fried onions, and frozen green beans--that's it!

Comfort Food. I can't remember a holiday or family gathering without a classic green bean casserole. I also like to make this outside of holidays because my family loves it, and I love to make it for them.

Hassle-Free and No Oven! Mix all the ingredients together then slow cooked until done. No oven space is required, so the oven is freed up for your other fabulous dishes!

Green Bean Casserole Slow Cooker Ingredients

Ingredients needed for making crockpot green bean casserole on a white wooden board.

Here are the ingredients you will need to make this slow cooker green bean casserole:

    • Condensed Cream of Mushroom Soup: use store-bought or make your own to make it gluten-free.
    • Milk: use any kind of milk, from skim milk to creamy oat milk or half and half.
    • Soy Sauce: use low sodium or regular. You can substitute with coconut aminos or tamari--both taste as good as soy sauce but are gluten-free.
    • French Fried Onions
    • Frozen Green Beans: After multiple tests I found that frozen cut green beans work best in this recipe for flavor and convenience. They have a much fresher taste than canned, and because they are already prepped and parboiled, you can just toss them in.
    • Seasonings: ground black pepper and garlic powder.

    Substitutions and Variations

    • While I think frozen cut green beans yielded the best results, you can substitute the frozen green beans with canned or trimmed fresh green beans. If you use canned you can reduce your cooking time. If you use fresh green beans, you may need to lengthen the amount of time needed.
    • To add a little brightness, stir in sour cream or squeeze in a little lemon juice after cooking. If you use sour cream you may need to warm the casserole a little longer.
    • Vegetable or chicken broth can be used in place of the milk.
    • Adjust any seasonings to taste.
    • Add other vegetables such as fresh mushrooms, diced onion and fresh garlic.
    • Garnish with crumbled cooked bacon.
    • Before serving, add in shredded cheddar cheese and garnish on top.

    How To Serve It

    • Allow the casserole to sit for 10 minutes before serving.
    • Garnish with fresh minced parsley or chives.
    • Top with shredded cheddar cheese or shredded parmesan cheese.
    • Meal idea! Serve this delicious green bean casserole with your other holiday favorites like easy spiral crockpot ham with coke, crockpot mashed potatoes with cream cheese and sour cream, crockpot stuffing with sausage and citrusy cranberry sauce in the crockpot.

Green Bean Casserole Slow Cooker Tips

    • Easily double or triple this recipe for as big of a party as you need.
    • If you find the casserole too thick, stir in more milk or broth.
    • For even more flavor, toast or brown the French fried onions in a skillet over medium heat before adding them to the casserole.
    • Make this recipe the night before and store it in the fridge until ready to slow cook.

    FAQ's

    How to store it

Once cooled transfer to an air tight container and store in the fridge for up to 4 days.

    How to reheat

Transfer the portion you want to reheat to a microwave-safe dish. Cover and heat in 30-second increments (on 50% power) until the desired temperature is met.

How do you keep green bean casserole from getting mushy?

Overcooking the green beans is what makes it mushy. If the green beans aren't mushy but the sauce is too thick then stir in extra milk or broth.

Which is better in green bean casserole canned or frozen?

There are benefits to both options. Canned green beans will cook a lot faster since they are already soft - so if you're in a hurry, use those. Frozen provide a much fresher taste and hold their integrity longer, so they can cook for longer periods of time if needed.

Can green bean casserole sit overnight?

Yes! You can prep the casserole directly in the crockpot insert the night before and refrigerate overnight. Cook until the beans are tender and the casserole is bubbly.

    • VARIATIONS:
      • I prefer frozen green beans in this recipe for convenience and the freshness they provide. Fresh trimmed green beans may be used but require a longer cooking time. Canned (drained) green beans may be used, and cooking time may be reduced.
      • To add a little brightness stir in sour cream or squeeze in a little lemon juice.
      • Broth can be used instead of milk.
      • Adjust seasoning with salt and pepper if needed.
    • TIPS: This recipe can easily be doubled or tripled; If the sauce is too thick, stir in more milk or broth (before topping with the french-fried onions); Meal prep right in the crockpot the night before and store it in the fridge until you're ready to start cooking.
    • SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Let sit for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with fresh minced parsley or chives.
