For more helpful hints, substitution ideas, slow cooking tips, and other delicious recipe ideas, check out my post above.TIPS: For the best flavor, use homestyle meatballs and real grated Swiss cheese. Let the slow cooker do its thing—low and slow makes the onions melt into the sauce. Stir in the sour cream and cheese at the very end so the sauce stays creamy and smooth.VARIATIONS: Swap Swiss for Gruyère or provolone for a slightly different cheesy finish. Add a splash of sherry or red wine when mixing in the soup for a more authentic French onion flavor. You can also use turkey or chicken meatballs if you want a lighter version.SERVING SUGGESTIONS: Serve on toasted French bread with a generous sprinkle of Swiss cheese and fresh herbs for a cozy, open-faced sandwich. Or keep it simple and serve straight from the crock as an appetizer with toothpicks. Pair with a crisp green salad or roasted veggies to round out the meal.
